WHAT IS SESSION?

Session is the governing body at First Presbyterian Church, composed of 12 members elected by the congregation for three year terms. According to the Presbyterian Book of Order, "Elders are chosen by the people. Together with the ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life relationships. They will serve faithfully as members of the session."

In March, 1998, Session adopted the following five year goals (1998-2003).

  1. Complete Phase 5 and 6 construction and complete paying for that construction by our 125th anniversary. "Debt free in 2003"
  2. Progress towards becoming a 50-50 church. (50% of the church's resources are spent external to the church and 50% are directed toward the congregation).
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to youth through an active, growing youth ministry program.

In order to carry out it's business, Session has formed five standing committees and commissions. Each session member serves on two Commissions or Committees of Session, one of the Standing Commissions or Committees and one of the Core Ministry Commissions.

Matt 16:19 I will give thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

Session endorses the establishment of ministry teams to carry out specific function, single goal projects.
