Ark Club
Annual Report
July 1998 to June 1999
And they came, two by two-- they first came in 1952, with the encouragement of Dr. Douglas Tiffany to establish supportive church couples' groups at First Presbyterian Church in Boise. They called it Ark Club, a nautical title, but not directly associated with the Admiralty of some of the other couples' associations. It was a prolific group and had many kids in the youth groups and children's choirs, and one of it's main profit functions for many years was a "Busy Lizzy" sale of outgrown clothing items which clothed its kids with other's castoffs. This tradition has continued, with current sales coming from the culinary artistry of the now senior members, who bid on coveted items, and for whom the prize of having the highest bill at the end of the auction nets them the dolorous "frog" for the coming year!
The years have taken all those "kids' away from home, and, unfortunately, also taken many of the members' spouses, but the group continues to support and welcome the bereaved, and finds its main function in this support mode these days.
We gather monthly for our substantial "pot-luck" meals, and programs of often fascinating or uplifting talks from community sources. Summer intervals see us taking short trips into interesting areas of the region. When our members were younger, the club undertook many vigorous supporting activities at the church, but currently this has decreased to mainly providing backup for the after-church coffee hours and financial support for various church projects. We find our mutual association most helpful and rewarding and encourage other church members to find similar groups.
