Elders and Deacons? Deacons are elected to care for the congregation. Session is the governing body at First Presbyterian Church, composed of 12 members elected by the congregation for three year terms. According to the Presbyterian Book of Order, "Elders are chosen by the people. Together with the ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life relationships.
